“The designers primed the audience with a blue smock cloaked in what appeared to be a white canvas—frame and all—plus polished oxfords. Yet the toile was actually linen bonded to white crepe. And the fragments of imagery that began to materialize toward Look 8 were laser-cut jacquard enhanced with embroideries and appliqués to achieve the blobbed reliefs.”

Why The Stripe

The striped piece for this resort season has become that special addition to the collection. With the new trends of military vs. relaxed, bohemian vs. minimalism, the stripe has gained its own exclusive place as a MUST HAVE in your wardrobe. For obvious reasons of stripes being nautical and…what’s more resort-y than nautical wear?

Here’s Misha Nonoo Resort collection

Of course it will always remain fashionable…be it in symmetry or mixed with geometrical shapes, circa Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2013

As a good collection unravels on the ramp, one sees multiple pieces that are separates which tie up together. There are dresses, gowns, jackets, skirts, belts and more. And the stripe piece now has its own special place. This is the kind of hushed fashion alteration we thrive on…to pick out the subtle and smooth transformations amidst seasons.

Some of you might say that stripes were always a basic closet need and to those we say kudos but the kind of revolution brought on, by structured and clean clothing in the recent years, requires stripes to have a star presence. It can be worn with prints, colour blocked, with a structured jacket or even a graphic tee. Dress it up, dress it down, layer it with a sheer piece but make sure you have this vital piece in your closet.

Summertime Happiness

There’s no doubt. No doubt that everyone is petrified of what India has in store for us this summer after that super delayed winter that lasted till mid March followed by depressing rains (best wishes to the farmers). So, the best suggestion we can give to all of you is to be petrified in full swing BUT prepare for the season. If you can’t help the outdoor walks that you need to make to the market or your house, make sure your skin doesn’t suffer. If you’re an outdoorsy person and cannot, for the love of God, stay at home, make sure your wardrobe is apt to beat the heat. And with that in mind, here is our summer selection of clothes, beauty products and accessories.

Hey water babies, if you’re the by-the-pool kind of friends, make sure to use plenty of sun block and remain hydrated. Read up on sun block myths here. A must read for the outdoor lovers. Now comes the fun part… the swimwear!

Norma Kamali swimwear is perfect for those vacationing spots where you might want to glam it up. Here’s model Carolyn Murphy in Vogue Germany 2012.

Resort wear is fresh on the Runway and our favourites are MSGM’s Cruise collection and Wanderlust by Quirk Box. Pair fun outfits with lace-up sandals or animal inspired designs (Sophia Webster you rock!) to give an edge to your accessories.

As far as jewellery is concerned, it’s best to keep it minimal to avoid discomfort from the heat. But for those who can’t resist a little frosting, go with midi rings and bangles or chains… nothing too binding.

Beauty and skincare are essential for summer as well as winter. Where you face dryness in winter and compensate with heavy duty hydrating products, summers push you to buy oil-free products. However, do not go overboard as your skin needs stability and hydration throughout. It’s the year for essential oils and we suggest to go with oils like lavender or patchouli for a perfect balance and it’s suitable for all seasons.

3 Characters as the Fall Fashion Line

For generations, little girls have looked up to the princesses in the fairy tales read to them. Magic carpets, infinite golden hair, superpowers to freeze anything and all sorts of supernatural things. Disney added new stories for the younger generations like Frozen, where the lesson didn’t lie in finding romantic love but on the bonds of sisterhood and friendship. Another story, Shrek taught us that love also means accepting the person for who they are… after all, Prince Charming doesn’t actually exist. And with these new additions, the film industry also gave us a fresh perspective when they made Maleficent. A movie where the evil witch from Sleeping Beauty got to tell HER side of the story. With these new age tales, character representation is of utmost importance. And with the Fall line out, here is our take on the looks that would make some of these iconic characters.

Elsa from the movie Frozen was the ice princess who could freeze anything with just a touch. We’re talking frozen lakes (and even an entire castle!). Blumarine showed sheers and florals for their Spring collection and also adapted some of those designs in their Fall line. Elsa’s gown, although blue, had an sheer overlay cape which reminded us of Blumarine! The character’s hair was in a thick perfect braid, similar to Eckhaus Latta. Beauty was purely and simply as shown for Honor.

Now, we HAD to add Maleficent (we’re simply too mesmerized by the fresh perspective thing). The character wore all black, had a super chic headgear as well. Below is our Runway interpretation of it. Moreover, Angelina Jolie‘s character sported highly contoured cheekbones with blood red lips. We skipped the lipper look, but picked something for those bronze cuts.

More on the dark side: The White Witch from Chronicles of Narnia had minimal make up with big hair and oh-so bold ensembles. We reinterpreted the war ensemble of Tilda Switon‘s character and narrowed it to Altuzarra for fashion, Discount Universe for hair and Proenza Schouler for the beauty look.

The AIFW Edit.

It started about a week prior to the event. Excitement. We’re talking sugar-high kind excitement. The Amazon India Fashion Week finally arrived and our team was set for, although selected few, fabulous shows. At the event, there were about a zillion designer stalls and as we saw them, we could literally hear the Hallelujah chorus ha. Upstairs was the Main Show Area where we lined up eagerly to see Mynah Designs by Nikhita Tandon, Prama by Pratima Pandey and Haro Barno by Sahil Kochhar followed by Taika by Poonam Bhagat, Sanskar by Sonam Dubal and Tribal by Ashima Leena

Mynah Designs was a beautiful collection, no doubt. Filled with blood reds and blacks and wave-like silhouettes it was appealing to the eye. But we felt it was more suitable for super fancy party wear as the collection did not feel very Autumn/Winter-y.

The next show was Prama by Pratima Pandey which started with some visual aids giving it a vintage-y and fairytale-like feel. Although my team doesn’t agree with me much, personally I really liked the collection. It had a strong Indian touch to it, there were earthy colours and relaxed silhouettes as it was inspired by Sleeping Beauty. And we all know about boxy silhouettes being all the rage currently. She cleverly showed subtle differences in hues through layering and texture play. There was this…royal, Kashmiri air to it mixed with a fairytale touch.

Moving on, the final collection for that show was Haro Barno by Sahil Kochhar. And his work surprised us immensely. There were constructed pullovers, ikkat-like prints in vibrant shades, and entire range of pinks and greens that left us flabbergasted. Each ensemble was tied together in unity and that is true understanding of design.

Taika by Poonam Bhagat was one of the best shows we have come across. This collection was the most cohesive one through its block colours, extraordinary silhouettes and oh my god, crazy head gears. It reminded us of Cubism, morphed in a more modern way with its sleek graphic shapes and prominent colour presence. The fusion between Indian and Western wear was brought out very well through the designer’s understanding of dominant and recessive colour organization. Moreover, Sanskar by Sonal Dubal’s pieces were a pleasant change. Mhm.

Now. Tribal by Ashima Leena A/W 2015. We were completely and totally smitten. The music, the lighting, the colours and of course the clothes: a tenner. The label showed gypsy headgears with Kashmiri head jewellery and layers. Oh the layers! Layers of sheer fabrics and subtle and light prints combined with block colours and statement silver pieces.

Monochromatic Manifestation

When we were drooling over the Fall Ready To Wear collection of this year, we found to love the colours, the prints, and everything in between. But personally, the blacks, greys and whites (and everything in between haha) caught my attention the most.

Suzanne Rae’s Fall collection showed relaxed silhouettes in calming greys and highly contrasting hues. The piece below is our favourite pick of the line.

Balenciaga, my love! The feature image of this blog is from Balenciaga’s Fall collection which looks like white moss on water. Moreover, Loewe displayed a diagonal tweed texture with interesting slouchy bag details in hued snakeskin.

In beauty, Anthony Vaccarelo’s line had models in blush pink lips and kohl detailing on one eye which reminds us of Egyptian symbols. Whatever said, it draws your attention for sure. Now, our love for Proenza Schouler is overwhelming, however, their beauty look this season was a miss. It breaks our heart to not be so fond of it but that black swish at the insides of the eyes creates a deep-set eyes look, which is not all that flattering. Sorry Schouler 😦

A La McCartney

The pictures are finally out! Yesterday Stella McCartney’s Ready-To-Wear Fall 2015 collection was presented at the Paris Fashion Week. Here are some of Team Brand Republix favourites from the collection.

style04-stella-mccartney 07-stella-mccartney 36-stella-mccartney

Nicole Phelps hit the nail on the head calling this collection “effortless” on style.com. The easiness of the silhouettes make the pieces appropriate for different age categories; be it office wear or the cocktail hour with your friends. McCartney added an army green hue and combined it with an electric blue top which is one of the more bold colour choices of her collection. However, its not the same old (kinda boring now) colour blocked look. The deceivingly subtle print on both separates is light and again, effortless.

15-stella-mccartney _AIT0119

The grey dress which carries segments of different textures is a very advanced design; it speaks luxury in a very mellow manner. If you look closely, the black and grey weaving is almost of different scales, making is visually breezy. The slouching sleeve and skewed order of fabric adds a mischievous tone. We hate to pick sides so blatantly but that is definitely the best ensemble.

_AIT0202 21-stella-mccartney

The fun is in the detailing. Side belt knots at the waist, asymmetrical placement of clashing textures, the marsala boot- Oh the marsala boot! And remarkable additions to the collection are the fur-no-fur pieces. In accessories, McCartney showed clutches and slip-through-strap minaudiere which are all the rage currently. The bags were the solo star in accessories. The beauty look was kept simple, very Paris.

Picking at WLFW SS15

Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week SS15 was not as exciting really maybe because we expected more out of designers. Some designers brought their A-game but some lay back to let this pass like no one will remember it. Well you are mistaken! We know summer is about layering down and wearing as minimal as possible but we felt like many didn’t make an effort. Yes, effortless chic is the idea here but not literally. Let’s take you through the stuff that we ACTUALLY liked.

Péro by Aneeth Arora

Always surprising us with her brilliant mind has yet again brought a brand new perspective for Indian women this summer. Her collection was “For a woman who would rather wear flowers in her hair than diamonds around her neck”. For real. The models wore massive yet beautiful floral headgear that screamed pretty. The collection named “Love on Foliage” was all white and floral paired with neon Nike shoes. Time to make sport shoes the THING. What better way to pair a bright pair of running shoes than with one of her flowy dresses with a masculine jacket. The models in white crochet dresses and playful hand-embroidered jackets walked down a grass ramp lined with flower pots which felt like watching a fashion show in a garden. Totally awesome!

Kavita Bhartia

Kavita Bhartia’s An Ode to Artisans was an amalgamation of European patterns on Mughal art sculpted silhouettes. Monochrome dress draped sideways paired with a lace shrug was a great twist to the collection that otherwise comprised of anarkali-like kurtas, skirts and cigarette pants etc. bleh. The gold mesh-like jacket with embroidery was what had us slide to the edge of the seat. The outfits were probably in need of accessories but the basic black and nude strappy sandles seem to do the trick.

Nachiket Barve

His collection this year was definitely derived from the African tribes but ‘not in a tribal way’. Inspiration from the sun, sand and sky was very clear in the designs…maybe too clear. The stark orange and blue did catch everyone’s attention whether or not you wanted to look at it. On the contrary the intricate embroidery on gold and peach colors was rather beautiful. A maxi dress with sheer, silver and plaid panels had a delicate embroidered bustier. We dig. These were accessorized with metal cuffs, spike rings and chunky wooden platforms heels that were constructed especially for the show. Sweet!

Shivan & Narresh

Known to derive inspiration from artists and sculptors across the globe and mold it into a sexy swimwear collection. Their SS15 collection was based on the American sculptor Alexander Caldor that was quite evident with the ‘Calder eye’ print on the resort wear. But we totally loved the ‘resort suit’ a combination of finest Italian jersey palazzos & a silk cape. Our pick was the FRINGED dress which was the new Beach-to-Bar look with hand-cut fringe on the swimsuits. Elegance redefined! All that jazz and sleek wet swept-back hair with minimal makeup was icing on the cake.

Payal Pratap

The collection ‘Banks of the Danube’ for SS15 was based on Eastern European-inspired colours, patterns and forms. It was a modern rendition of regional costumes and the symbolic art of the area. Pixelated prints, mosaic prints and motifs were woven into jacquard fabrics to convey the theme. The beautiful puffy silhouettes in white were our favourites. The palazzo pants and full-sleeved woven ankle length shirt-jacket tie-up was exceptionally elegant and sexy. Paired with turquoise heels to give that pop of colour and contrasting dangler earrings just gave it that edge.

Raakesh Agarvwal

Raakesh Agarvwal brought back the denims with a BANG! Rompers, jeans ripped to no end, high waist and crop tops paired so well that we wanted to wear them right away. How can one keep their hands off of such beauty? He also wooed us with bright orange and yellows on a white ramp that stood out like no other. Shimmer that stole the spotlight  and dresses that danced to the beat, the designer had it all. The designer got spot on colors and silhouettes in his collection for SS15.  Did you hear that? The 70’s are BACK! What made us slip to the edge of our soft cushion seats with the fringes that hung from a tube top and swayed with the model’s strut.

36 Angels, $10m Bra & Taylor Swift

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2013 blew NYC and the rest of the world away last week. Besides being one of the most awaited shows…nay extravagant…on the fashion and style landscape, it’s probably one of the most widely watched TV event EVERRR. (The Show airs in Australia on Fox 8 soon after it airs on December 10 in the US. And we are not about to miss it!)

main

Exuberant colours, over the top styling, bling, crystals, wings, star studs made the Victoria’s Secret night. The event was a culmination of about a year of conceptualising, planning and preparation and happened at Manhattan’s Lexington Armory. With six separate sub themes running – British Invasion, Birds of Paradise, Parisian Nights, Shipwrecked, Snow Angels and PINK Network, it was a potpourri of fantastical decadence.

The first few shows were aired in the 1990s around Valentine’s Day for brand promotion. By 2001, the show made its network television broadcast on ABC, and has been broadcast on CBS ever since. The first 4s hows were held at the Plaza Hotel NYC and then subsequently it has most often been held at the 69th Regiment Armory in the city.

This Venue is bound by 25th and 26th Streets and Lex and Park Avenues in NYC. Originally built in 20th century, it was to be a training centre for National Guard. Needless to mention that a building of that history, a show of that magnitude and valuables (in form of fineries) called for the NYPD security to be the gatekeeper with K-9 patrolling and private security. What Victoria’s Secret created inside, in the otherwise stern looking building, was a star-studded affair with the biggest names across the board. On the catwalk, debutantes Malaika Firth and Josephine Skriver were first timers. The ramp was a 120 ft sparkler with the most famous Angels walking- Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes, Lily Aldridge, Behati Prinsloo, and Karlie Kloss. We did note that Miranda Kerr was MIA this year.

The “BRA”SSTACKS

  • Total Angels: 36
  • Venue: 69 Regiment Armory
  • Budget: Approx $12mm
  • Production: done and dusted, inc. with producers Edward G. Razek, Monica Mitro, Ian Stewart and Hamish Hamilton. Interestingly one of their offices is in a place called India House in NYC.
  • Direction: Hamish Hamilton
  • Make Up: Dick Page and VS products only.
  • Skin care: BeachSexy bronzing and Runway Ready Body Care products.
  • Hair: Orlando Pita, international celebrity hair and fashion stylist
  • Publication: GraziaDaily was given an all access pass to the show.

BULB BURNER HIGHLIGHTS

*The Show stopper (almost) was by seven time GRAMMY winner, 23 year old: Taylor Swift, who donned a super crystal outfit and performed with rock band Fall Out Boy. She wore a flitted sexy sparkler by designer Zuhair Murad and a Union Jack inspired dress. This is practically the new virus on the internet besides pictures of her belting out her hit ” I Knew You Were Trouble”

*Other super performances on stage were Award-nominated artist Fall Out Boy, A Great Big World and Neon Jungle .

*Adrianna Lima’s costume was no less a wonder. She wore an insane fill sleeved crop jacket type “Pearl Queen body suit with over 3,000 pearl buttons sown in to create her outfit.

*South African  Angel Candice Swanepoel wore the Fantasy Bra, designed by International jewellery company Mouwad worth an estimated $10 mm, held 4,200 precious gems encased in 18-carat gold setting with a 52-carat pear-shaped ruby that adorned the middle of the bra. By way of records, the $15 million price tag for the 2000 bra worn by Gisele Bündchen earned a place in the Guinness World Records as the most expensive lingerie ever created. The $3 million 2009 Harlequin Fantasy Bra and the $2 million 2010 Bombshell Fantasy Bra were designed by Damiani.

The After Part at TAO

TAO, one of our favourite bars in the whole world was the venue for the after party. The event was a star studded affair, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Fall Out Boy, Ciara, Dylan McDermott and Stephen Dorff as just a few names of attendees. We remember catching up with a few old friends a year ago and TAO was then relatively a NY after hours scene but we can only say so much about what happened this night. But allow us to say…really nicely sectioned out. You walk into a lounge bar area with service to the left and loose seating. You keep walking into the main hall which faces a gigantic seated buddha and 1st floor seating which borders the sides so you can have a fantabulous view of the action below. On a typical day there are dinner seatings both above and below, but we am sure for this night they cleared the house out.

AWESOME FACTS

We turned to Wiki to cross check. You might want to know that in the initial 2001 airing, ABC blurred the screen on particularly sheer lingerie to achieve the TV-14 rating.  In 2002, the National Organization for Women and Parents Television Council protested the show calling it a “soft-core porn” infomercial. Nonetheless, some affiliates have chosen not to air the show in past years including Fisher Broadcasting affiliates in Idaho.  London Broadcasting Company in Texas refuses to air the show. even today . In 2009, the American Decency Association organized email letters of protests to sponsors of the show including AT&T, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Netflix, Nikon, and Reebok.

After having seen all these and read, have you ever wondered who and how the insane Wings are made? According to a recent quip given to elle.com, the team of 9 apparently called Killer- Angel Wing Makers – Elle asked “About how long does it to take to put together one pair of wings? The really big ones can take as much as 400 hours. A tiny wing can take 20 or 30, depends on what kind of construction”. Whaaaat!? Read more: http://bit.ly/1djEwrd
This team and the key lady behind it seems super discreet and needless to say why. The Angel Wings is the key element besides a super glam show and theatrical decadence that sets it apart.

The Show airs in Australia on Fox 8 soon after it airs on December 10 in the US.
